Working in the self-storage industry, StoreStuff Self Storage in Wellington has witnessed some memorable moments over the years. From ingenious packing solutions gone wrong to creative misuses of storage space, these real stories from our Wellington facility demonstrate both the versatility and limitations of self-storage solutions.
The Great Wellington Packing Challenge
A Wellington family, caught between homes during renovations, took on what became known as The Great Wellington Packing Challenge. Determined to fit their entire household into one StoreStuff storage unit, they packed every item with surgical precision. Furniture, boxes, kayaks, and skis were stacked in a masterpiece of spatial efficiency — a true Tetris triumph.
Then came the plot twist. As the summer holidays approached and flight prices began to climb, they decided to book a spontaneous getaway. There was just one problem — their passports were safely tucked away… in a box at the very back of the unit.
What followed was a mix of laughter and mild despair as they navigated their own packing puzzle to retrieve that single, crucial box. It was a reminder that whilst self storage units can fit more than you’d think, a little foresight when labelling and leaving out travel essentials can save a big headache later.
At StoreStuff, we see it all — from kayak towers to “passport extractions” — and our range of unit sizes means you don’t have to stack your life like a puzzle just to make it fit.
Musicians and the Concrete Concert Hall
Some creative Wellington musicians have mistakenly thought storage units make perfect practice spaces. We understand the appeal – concrete walls might seem to offer interesting acoustics, and our 24/7 access could theoretically allow for late-night jam sessions. However, imagine trying to retrieve your Christmas decorations while a band next door rehearses their latest indie rock anthem at full volume.
While it might sound like a uniquely Wellington rock-and-roll dream, using storage units as practice spaces isn’t something we allow. Storage units are designed for keeping your belongings safe, not for creating the next great album. This demonstrates that while StoreStuff’s flexible storage solutions are versatile, they have specific purposes that keep everyone happy.
The Great Truck Trip That Wasn’t
One of our more ambitious customers once had a bright idea — why not take advantage of StoreStuff’s free move-in truck and drive it all the way to Auckland? After all, it’s technically “just up the road,” right?
Unfortunately for this budding road-tripper, our free truck hire only covers moves within the Wellington region — up to about Upper Hutt and Porirua at a stretch. Beyond that, it’s strictly for local use.
Kudos for the creativity though. We admire the spirit of someone who saw a free truck and dreamed big. But as we gently reminded them, StoreStuff’s trucks are built for local moves into our Wellington facility, not cross-island expeditions.
The Great E-Scooter Power Heist
Every facility has its “creative” moments. One customer quietly unplugged one of our dehumidifiers and used the socket to charge their e-scooter.
Here’s the problem — e-scooters and other large lithium batteries (over 20,000 mAh) are strictly prohibited. If it’s not allowed on a plane, it’s not allowed here. These batteries are a major fire risk – even more-so when charging.
That’s why StoreStuff now has clear “Prohibited Items” signs around the facility and includes a notice in every welcome pack.
The $5,000 Mattress Makeover
One customer learned the hard way that not everything with wheels belongs in storage. They parked their lawnmower in the corner of the unit — tank still half full — right beside their brand-new $5,000 mattress.
A few weeks later, that familiar petrol smell gave away what had happened. The fuel had leaked, soaked through the cardboard boxes, and into the mattress fabric. By the time they discovered it, the damage was permanent.
At StoreStuff, we don’t allow any fuel, oil, or flammable liquids on-site — even in small engines. Mowers, trimmers, and tools must be completely drained before storage. It’s not just policy — it’s about protecting your belongings and your neighbours’.
Lesson learned: drain it before you store it.
